Please note this information only applies to broadband supplied via a BT phone line, and not cable TV based technologies!

As your webmaster, I would like to get a picture of ADSL broadband speeds in and around Buckhorn Weston.  This information might help with developing new features and facilities for our Club website.

All I would like you to do is to please use this simple test to measure your download and upload speed and send them to me with your postcode...

BroadbandMax ADSL  speedtest

Please Email Results with your Post Code to me

I don't have enough information to be able to give indicative speeds for broadband across the area, but it seems that for those between Cross's Garage and Bye, your  download speed should be from 1 Mb/s [1 Megabits per second, or 1000 kilobits per second] down to 700kb/s [700 kilobits per second].  To get the best possible speed in this area, you will need a recent BT NTE5 termination box fitted with an ADSL face plate (or alternatively a BT iplate which probably won't quite be as effective).

Interestingly, the "3" mobile network seems to have a new mast somewhere on the A30 near the Nyland junction.  I have managed around 1.1Mb/s download (and nearly as good for upload) at 2 miles clear-line-of-site range provided the "dongle" is positioned outside at a good height.  This can provide an extremely good value solution (and I would recommend pay-as-you-go to limit your risk to any unexpectedly high bills for exceeding your limit) but like all wireless systems, it can be dependent on how many other users are using it at the same time.  The latency (which introduces a delay of around half a second) is probably too high for gamers, but for the majority of users this is should not be an issue.  The other advantage is of course that you can use your "dongle" in a lot of populated areas for proper mobile broadband if you take your laptop when travelling within the UK.  The other "3" base station covering BW is the Wincanton base station, so it appears we are now fairly well covered but I do emphasise the need for a clear line of site for good performance.  July 2010

A further bit of mobile broadband news is that the same mast near Nyland also seems to support T-Mobile at similar download speeds, although my information seems to suggest that the upload speed is pretty modest in comparison with the "3" service.  August 2010

Please note that while different ISP (Internet Service Providers) can have an effect on download speeds depending on how they manage their traffic loading, the main constraint for rural villages is the length of the telephone line between the local exchange and your phone.  Most people in Buckhorn Weston are connected to the Templecombe exchange, while Kington Magna uses East Stour.  Other local exchanges serving this area include Gillingham and Wincanton.   Broadly speaking, in order to get the "magic" figure of 2000 kilobit/s (i.e. 2Mb/s) for BBC iPlayer, you would need to be within 3.5 km of your exchange.  This 2Mb/s figure is the value being quoted as a target by some campaigners trying to achieve near-universal access to high speed internet.  People much closer to exchanges can hope to get up to 7Mb/s, while some have even been offered speeds of up to 24 Mb/s in certain parts of the UK but this will not be possible from our local exchanges for quite some time yet  -  and people who are more remote are unlikely to get any great improvement in the immediate future.

Broadband terminology can be quite difficult to understand but some authoritive uk-based web sites to start with are

 thinkbroadband.comsamknows.com and kitz.co.uk

Wikipedia also covers ADSL well, but note there are some important differences in how ADSL technology is used in different countries and markets

Thanks, Chris Wildey
